Wedding planning can sometimes feel like a joke. You are expected to follow certain traditions and live within certain parameters of the strange industry.  You are  also expected to sift through thousands of local wedding vendors to find the perfect fit to your budget and aesthetic for your wedding. Most people end up getting so frustrated that they simply call it quits or rollover and let somebody else make the decisions, ultimately not being satisfied with the way their wedding turned out.

The only way I can do it all for you is if you hire me through my company Tiny Luxe weddings, where we pre-plan luxury level weddings and events for couples and people who simply cannot fathom doing any of it themselves. All you have to do is choose a date on our calendar with an attached theme and color scheme. From there all you have to do is decide what to wear and show up on the day of your wedding ready to party. That’s it!

However, if you are not going to go that route I want to make it as easy as possible for you when choosing a wedding photographer local to you.

One of the first things I try to tell people to do when sifting through wedding photographers is deciding on the style of photography you would like for your wedding photos. There are a lot of technical terms and styles in the photography world, and this can get confusing in a hurry. Today I want to break down the three most common types of photography editing styles using common buzz words that are trending in today’s photography industry

This will help you when searching hashtags on Instagram or even just googling wedding photographers in your area.

So let’s dive in!

  1. Dark and moody:

Why I am an elopement Photographer ⠀
⠀
⠀
It’s all fun and games until it’s not. Planning a wedding with all of your family and friends in attendance is inherently time consuming and stressful. As soon as you think you have it all under control life reminds you that you have no idea what you’re doing. ⠀
⠀
That’s why intimate weddings are my jam. I still adore the big, fun weddings with loud receptions and even louder, drunk bridal parties. They are fun, fast paced and a little crazy. You are never sure what might happen on the day of. ⠀
⠀
What I got tired of was watching my Brides and my grooms get worn down. They were being beaten into the ground by budgets, family members, never ending lists and decisions , and so much more.I began to see a pattern, one in which I no longer wanted to be a part of the fabric. ⠀

Goth wedding photos? Maybe for some people but for you, Yuck!

Don’t be scared! When you see the term dark and moody as related to Photography, we are not talking about your weird Emo Cousin Who takes photos of dead things and people crying.

Instead, what dark and moody Photography. refers to is basically just embracing the natural shadows, giving people tans, all in high contrasted images.

Especially popular for adventurous young couples and photographers Who traipse atop mountains for the perfect elopement photograph, Instagram influencers and newbie photographers who fall for the editing preset trap.

I’m giving this look a hard time but honestly I veer in that direction with a lot of my hand editing. It’s actually a beautiful look and these photographs can push through and attach a lot of emotion! Usually, when I look at a photograph done in this style, I should say WELL done in the style, I usually feel the need to burst into tears because my heart is so full and I can feel what they were feeling in that moment.

So I guess maybe it is a little Emo after all.

2. Light and Airy:

Get ready to be blown away… Literally…just kidding, or am I?

People who use this technique when editing their photographs give their images a very bright look. Everything is a bit, dreamy and physically light, you feel as though it could vanish at any moment. Which I guess is rather fitting for the fact that the moments captured photographically vanish in the same moment that they are created but that’s a philosophical conversation for another day.

Images edited in this style are edited for a film aesthetic. So if you desire that artistic film look this might be calling you.  It’s basically the pink and preppy girl of the imaginary high school for photographs. The goth dark and Moody’s Counterpart. As where we started off with photographs that were very high contrast that embrace shadows, light and airy is afraid of the dark, so afraid. This style of this photo editing prefers to live in dreamy atmosphere where everything is bubbly and positive all the time!

People who receive a gallery of these images usually feel like their moments were taken out of their subconscious and show how they really want to see themselves rather than taken from real life.

It really is a beautiful and sweet interpretation of life and everything that we hold dear.

3. Clean and Classic:

The jock. Or rather, the high school football coach who was the captain of the football team his senior year of high school and can’t let that go. Suddenly he is old and doesn’t know how he got there but desperately tries to change that.

He knows all the technical terms that the kids don’t, he’s clearly superior to them in every way and could obviously run circles around their athletic abilities. But instead has to stand on the sidelines and just yell a bunch of industry correct terms at them.

This is a  style for those wanting to look back and remember life exactly as it happened. The colors are generally true to life and contrasted in such a crisp and clean way. The subjects truly pop out of the photograph. This editing style usually takes natural light and artificial light and combine them into stunning real life portraiture.

It is a straightforward approach to wedding photography that a lot of people breathe a sigh of relief over when they see it. The emotion from these photographs comes from the magic of real life details that can only be seen when the photographer knows what to look for. Dust becomes glitter, tears become vibrant and sweaty groups of reception dancers stay action packed even  in still photographs.

Now that you know a little bit more about what is going on in the world of wedding photography hopefully you can move forward with your search a little bit more confidently.

And remember professional photographers are not cheap and cheap photographers are not professional.
